Laboratory test nomenclature updated in Finland
On April 18, 2024, the updated version of the Finnish Laboratory Tests Nomenclature was published by the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare (THL) to come into force on May 1, 2024. The nomenclature is maintained by the Association of Local and Regional Authorities. It covers studies in clinical chemistry, clinical physiology, clinical microbiology, clinical neurophysiology, genetics, pathology, and functional diagnostic tests (such as spirometry or ECG) and is used to unify coding laboratory procedures in Finland. The Laboratory Tests Nomenclature is also used to code the tests in private settings with coverage from the national public payor (KELA).
A total of four new codes were introduced in the updated version concerning in-vitro diagnostics. Some examples of newly introduced codes are provided below:
- 6812 P-C-reactive protein, sensitive method;
- 6813 fP-Lipoprotein (a).
The letter before the code name specifies the sample type: P – plasma, fP – plasma from a fasting patient.
